From Kappy Allen
World Champion Barrel Racer
When I came to Dr. Ward my horses were stressed, we were suffering seemingly endless and recurrent injuries, and everyone had a bad attitude. Like many, I had fallen prey to the allure of "quick fixes" and fads. A friend told me about this "lady vet" who practiced "alternative medicine." It sounded like a fad to me so I could not resist. It was the best decision I have ever made.

If you haven't already purchased Madalyn's new book, I highly recommend that you do! I have given it to five friends and everyone has said wonderful things about it. I have one copy at the barn and one at the house. Also, I love the photo of Leta's mare on the front cover! I already used the book to reference one of my horses that has an abcess. Thanks Madalyn for writing this book so we have your knowledge to utilize quickly. -- Cyndi Funk

The size of this book is misleading! Dr. Ward has packed a lot on each page covering a wide range of topics. This book reminds me of Dr. Spock's book for new mothers--infinitely readable and practical. Dr. Ward's empathy for horses shines through. She has written a horse owner's Bible.

Her book is just fabulous, and I am glad to be able to pass along her information so all will benefit.
-- Allyson Gernandt

Dr. Ward and her program quite literally turned my barrel racing career around. I learned that "quick fixes" are no fixes at all, and that fads are for fashion and not for horsekeeping. Starting with the basics that you will learn in the pages of this book we developed a balanced program of good nutrition, fitness training, general maintenance, and consistency that has enabled my equine partners and me to achieve a level of performance that would otherwise have been beyond reach. Since he's been under Dr. Ward's watchful eye, Risky Chris has won almost every major title in professional barrel racing.

With seemingly infinite patience, Dr. Ward has shown me that there is just no substitute for basic good health. A healthy horse rarely gets stressed, is less prone to injury, and develops a winning attitude. Dr. Ward's program definitely achieves this result.

An exchange with my dad several summers ago pretty much sums it all up. As we were driving to Cheyenne, Wyoming after having won first at the rodeo in Salinas, California, he commented that he couldn't see why I insisted on taking Chris to the "lady chiropractor" every week because it looked to him like Chris was running just fine. I couldn't help but just laugh and tell him that I thought he'd answered his own question.

If you are committed to your horse you will never regret having taken the time to learn about Dr. Ward's program. We are all fortunate that she has taken the time to share with us her vast clinical knowledge and practical experience. The selfish and competitive part of me wishes this book had never been written; the horse lover in me recommends it with unbridled enthusiasm.

The Perfect Book for Any Time!
I raise a few colts every year. In the fall I generally wean by the weather instead of their age. I try to pick a time when the weather will be rather stable for about 4 to 7 days to help them through this stressful time. During mid-October I found a settled time and weaned my two boys. They went in a pen with an older mare for comfort and security. Both were eating well before weaning. Everything went real smooth with just one day of crying for mom, and that wasn't really much. Exactly two weeks into weaning, on a Saturday morning while on morning feed rounds, I discovered the sorrel colt was not coming over to eat. He wouldn't move and he was breathing hard. He seemed very distressed. First I looked him over for respiratory problems, which is generally the #1 thing I am trying to avoid at weaning time and during any colt's first winter. Then looked the boy over for injury--maybe he flipped himself while playing. I could not pinpoint any sore areas and no visible injury. Finally it dawned on me he was having an acute laminitis attack. Not in a baby!! I pondered whether to call my local veterinarian but decided to wait, as would just fill the colt up with drugs. I felt like I had ruined this good colt who was barely 6 months old! I went to the house, got Madalyn's book out, and found just what I needed. There was a whole section on acute laminitis. Yes the description fit what I felt the colt was going through. She recommended four different remedies, three of which seem to fit his situation: Apis for swelling in his hind legs, Arnica for his pain, and Nux for settling his stomach. Now I needed a powerful anti-inflamitory! I had plenty of XanGo in the refrigerator so I gave him 30ccs orally with a syringe. He loved it. In fact he was showing some improvement within an hour. Within four hours he was remarkablely better. I also looked up some accupressure points to help get his energy moving and to ease him. He really enjoyed that. He was not halter broke yet, but during this process, we started working on that. He was very open to all the attention. My intention was set on easing him and he knew it. I had put in a call to Madalyn while reading her book and she was able to return my call later that after. She was thrilled the book had helped get me right on track and that things were already progressing nicely to recovery. She had me continue the Nux thru Sunday and then keep up the XanGo doses at 30ccs three times a day. Within 48 hours all symptoms were gone!!! The little colt, Rojo, is 100% back to normal and has no remaining reactions or complications from this bout. He was back on his feed program with added Essentials, Calf Manna and XanGo but at a maintenance dose within a week. So Madalyn's book is the perfect reference for anytime, even an emergency!
